Toffee Squares Recipe Preparation:
First butter a 10 by 15 inch glass, or metal pan REAL GOOD!
Preheat oven to 280 degrees, (DO IT NOW so your oven will be ready when you are.)
An’ make sure your oven racks are IN THE MIDDLE, (Why? Because Toffee Squares aren't too good when they turn out doughy on top, an’ burnt on the bottom, that’s why.)
Toffee Squares Recipe Ingredients:
1 cup (1/2 pound) butter or margarine
(Use butter, it tastes much better, you don't always need to worry about counting calories.)
1 cup white granulated sugar
1 egg
2 cups all purpose flour
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 cup chopped pecan or walnuts
Toffee Squares Recipe Directions:
In a large bowl and electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until creamy. Separate the egg. Beat yolk into butter mixture; cover and reserve white part of egg.
In another bowl, stir together flour and cinnamon; add to butter mixture, using your hands if necessary to blend thoroughly.
Again with your hands, spread toffee squares dough evenly over bottom of a greased 10 by 15 inch baking pan. Beat the egg white lightly, then brush over dough to cover evenly. Sprinkle pecan or walnuts over top; press nuts in slightly.
Bake toffee squares in a 280 degrees oven for 1 full hour or until firm when lightly touched. While still hot, cut into 2 inch squares. Let toffee squares cool in pan on a rack. Store squares in airtight containers.
Recipe makes about 5 dozen toffee squares.
